In Memory of Professor Rulan Chao Pian (1922-2013)
The University Library System of The Chinese University of Hong Kong records with deep sadness the passing of Professor Rulan Chao Pian on November 30, 2013 at the age of 91 in her Cambridge home.
Our deepest gratitude to Professor Pian for her generosity, donating her entire collection of books on music, audio-visual materials and machines, teaching materials, notes, and musical instruments to the University in the years from 2006-2009. The donation becomes the treasure of the University Library – the Rulan Chao Pian Collection, it includes such precious items as her personal dairy and her correspondence and photographs with students, scholars and notabilities. The Collection is academically significant not just in music; it is coeval and intertwined with the 20th century history of China, a repository, a treasury of contemporary Chinese history and culture. It is Professor Pian’s wish that her donation would set an example, inducing scholars to value the study of East Asian history and culture, and the preservation and sharing of such materials. In the years to come, the Rulan Chao Pian Collection will continue to benefit researchers and scholars at The Chinese University of Hong Kong and beyond.

Rulan Chao Pian, an eminent scholar of Chinese music, an influential Chinese language teacher, and a mentor to students and younger colleagues in China, Hong Kong, Taiwan and North America, died peacefully on November 30, 2013 at the age of 91 in her Cambridge home. [Read the full obituary]

“An Exhibition In Memory of Professor Rulan Chao Pian” , held at the Chung Chi College Elisabeth Luce Moore Library, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, from 27 March 2014 to 2 June 2014, is extended to October 5, 2014. Exhibits include Professor Pian’s manuscripts, notes, correspondences, photos, publications and articles on her. We hope that through this exhibition, the CUHK community can learn more from Professor Pian’s works, accomplishments, contributions, and most of all, her deeply positive attitude towards teaching, research and life.[View more]

Pian and Rulan Chao Pian Memorial Fund has been set up at The Chinese University of Hong Kong for the maintenance and development of the Rulan Chao Pian Collection at the CUHK Library and to support scholarly research using the Pian Collection at CUHK and/or Harvard University.
